Short version: 9 to 12 months out for a Saturday in peak season, 6 to 9 months for most other dates.
Longer version, including what to do if you are reading this three months from your wedding and starting to panic.
Florida Peak Season Is Backwards
In most of the country, summer is wedding season. In Florida it is the opposite, because nobody wants an outdoor wedding in August.
Peak here runs October through April. Those Saturdays book first and fastest.
May through September is our slow season. More availability, more flexibility on pricing, and honestly some great weather in early May and late September.
If your date is a Saturday in November, March, or April, book early. If it is a Thursday in July, you have room.
The Order to Book Vendors
Photographers get booked earlier than most couples expect because we only take one wedding per day. Unlike a caterer or a florist, we cannot double up.
Rough order:
- Venue (sets your date)
- Photographer and videographer (one per day, book fast)
- Caterer if not included
- DJ or band
- Florist
- Everything else
Photography lands second for a reason.

What Actually Holds a Date
A signed contract and a retainer. Nothing else.
A verbal yes holds nothing. Neither does an email saying you are interested. I get this call regularly, someone who thought they had a photographer and did not, and the date is gone.
Mine is a $750 retainer plus a signed contract, and the date is genuinely yours at that point.
If You Are Already Inside the Window
Do not panic. It happens constantly and it works out more often than not.
Be flexible on the photographer, not the date. Your first choice may be booked. Your third choice may be excellent.
Ask about associates. Some studios have a team.
Ask directly about your date. Skip the long inquiry, just ask "are you free on March 14." Saves everyone time.
Consider a shorter package. If budget got tight because you are booking late, six hours of someone good beats ten hours of someone you are unsure about.
Ask for referrals. When I am booked I refer people to photographers I actually trust. Most of us do this. It costs you nothing to ask.
Booking Very Early
You can book 18 to 24 months out and some couples do, especially for popular dates.
One thing to check: does the contract lock your price? It should. If a photographer raises rates next year, your signed price should hold.
The Engagement Session Angle
If your package includes an engagement session, book the photographer early enough to actually use it. Ideally you shoot it 6 to 9 months before the wedding, which means booking before that.
Beyond the photos, it is the single best way to get comfortable with your photographer before the day that matters.
