Somewhere around day nine you will start refreshing your email. Everyone does. So here is exactly what is happening on my end during that wait.
The Short Answer
Sneak peeks: 24 to 48 hours. A handful of edited images you can post immediately.
Full gallery: 6 to 8 weeks for a wedding. 2 to 3 weeks for an engagement session.
Industry standard runs 4 to 12 weeks. Anything past 12 without explanation is worth asking about.
What Is Actually Happening
This is the part nobody explains, and it makes the wait make more sense.
Backing up. The moment I leave, files get copied to multiple drives in multiple locations. Nothing gets edited until there are at least three copies.
Culling. A ten hour wedding produces somewhere between 3,000 and 6,000 frames. Most of those are duplicates, blinks, and near misses from shooting bursts of a moment. Getting that down to the 600 or so that actually go in your gallery takes hours, and it is the least glamorous part of the job.
Color. Every image gets adjusted so the whole gallery looks consistent. Your dress should be the same white in the church and on the lawn, even though the light was completely different.
Individual editing. Every delivered image gets touched by hand. Exposure, crop, and cleanup where needed.
Delivery. Gallery built, images uploaded at full resolution, download and print options enabled.
Why It Is Not Faster
Two honest reasons.
Volume. 600 images edited properly is genuinely 20 to 30 hours of work.
Queue. During peak season in Florida, October through April, I might have several weddings in the queue. They go in order.
Why You Should Be Suspicious of Very Fast
If someone promises a full gallery in a week, ask what their editing process is. Usually it means a preset applied in bulk with no individual attention, which shows up as inconsistent skin tones and images that look fine as thumbnails and rough at print size.
Fast is not automatically bad. It is just worth understanding what is being skipped.
Speeding It Up
Ask about a rush option. Many photographers offer one for a fee.
Get married off season. A June wedding in Florida often comes back faster than a November one, simply because the queue is shorter.
Ask for specific sneak peeks. If you need a particular photo for a thank you card, ask. I would rather pull one for you than have you wait.
What You Get
Full resolution digital files with printing rights, so you can print anywhere you want.
An online gallery you can share with family, with download access.
No watermarks on delivered images.
Worth asking any photographer directly: are digital files included, and do I have printing rights? Both should be yes, and both are occasionally not.
Back Up Your Gallery
The moment you get it, download everything and put it in two places. Cloud plus an external drive.
Most photographers keep galleries online for a year or two, not forever. I keep backups longer than most, but do not rely on anyone else for the only copy of your wedding.
