St. Pete is my favorite city in the bay area to photograph, and it is not close.
Tampa has the skyline. St. Pete has color, walkability, murals on half the buildings, and a beach on the other side of the peninsula that turns pink most evenings. As a wedding photographer working across St. Petersburg and Tampa, this is where I send couples who want their engagement photos to look like somewhere specific instead of anywhere.
Here is where I actually take people.
Downtown After Dark
Central Avenue and the streets running off it get quiet and warm right after sunset, and the storefront light does something no reflector can replicate.
This works best on a weeknight. Weekend crowds are fun but they slow us down.
The Mural District
The stretch roughly between 5th and Central is covered in large scale murals, and they change often enough that there is always something new. Good for couples who want color without a lot of fuss.
Two practical notes. Murals face different directions, so some are in full shade by late afternoon and some are blasted with sun. And a few are on active parking lots, which is fine, we just work around cars.
The Pier and North Straub Park
The new Pier gives you clean modern architecture, water on three sides, and a lot of open sky. North Straub Park next door has the big oaks if you want something softer in the same trip.
Vinoy Park
Waterfront, palms, and the pink hotel behind you. It is popular for a reason and it holds up.
Go early evening. Parking along Beach Drive is metered and fills up fast on nice days.
Pass-a-Grille
The southern tip of St. Pete Beach, and the quietest good beach in the county. Narrow streets, old cottages, and a stretch of sand that faces west into the sunset.
This is my pick when a couple says they want the beach but not the crowd.
Sunken Gardens
A hundred year old botanical garden in the middle of the city. Dense, green, and completely unlike everything else on this list.
You need a permit and a reservation for photos here, so plan ahead. It is worth the paperwork if you want something lush.
Fort De Soto
Technically Tierra Verde, practically a St. Pete session. Miles of shoreline, sea oats, and dunes that give you height and texture.
Picking Between Them
If you want color and personality, do downtown plus the murals.
If you want water and sunset, do Pass-a-Grille or Fort De Soto and nothing else. Beaches are a full session on their own.
If you want both, start downtown ninety minutes before sunset and drive to the beach for the last thirty. It is tight but I have done it plenty of times.
One Thing About St. Pete Light
The peninsula means you can shoot a sunrise over the bay and a sunset over the Gulf on the same day, about twenty minutes apart by car. No other city around here gives you that.
